Modest Prom! Question & Answer

Here's an email I received from a ModestFlair reader:

"Asslamualykum,
I am graduating from high school on june 21st. I am confused on what I should wear. I was hoping you could help me out. I am kinda of on the heavy side and want to wear something comfortable but I want it to look chic not casual and like I didn't try. Thank you!!!!!"
I did a quick search for plus size prom dresses online, and found this awesome store:

http://www.simplydresses.com/plus-size-prom-dresses

Here are some of my favorites for modesty and for flattering a curvy body. Now obviously you will have to wear a shrug or wrap to cover the arms (I've added some photos below the dresses) and I would recommend a tight undershirt as well to cover the cleavage and collarbone area otherwise you will have to be very careful about keeping your hijab (if you wear hijab) in place. See my post on AustereAttire to see how they wear their hijabs loose upfront and tight around the neck for an elegant, modest cover.

You will notice most of these have an empire waistline which means right under the bossom. This is the best place to have a waistline for heavier girls as it is the thinnest part of the upper body, then the skirt just falls from there hiding the tummy, if the skirt is nice and full. You said you don't want a too-formal look, so I've chosen dresses with chic, fun patterns and loose, full fabric. Nothing too tailored or stiff!

If the dress you choose has open cleavage (which most do!) I would recommend taking the dress to a seamstress to get  her ideas on how to elegantly cover the area, then just wear a shrug! You can find formal satin shrugs in white on most bridal websites (just do a quick search!), and black ones all over the mall/internet like the one from Forever21 below:

I hope this helps! Have a wonderful prom and send me a photo (headless if you like :) so I can share!

Cool Calligraphy Tees for Women!

Look fashionable and make a statement! Islamic calligraphy print shirts for women in casual cotton! These are brought to you by Artizara and Primomoda, two of the most  stylish Muslimah stores online!

I can totally see teens rocking this look, I'd wear this for walking/working out too! Only $25 on sale; Primomoda has a BIG sale on now, lots of nice long shirts for under $30!

Artizara's got a whole page of calligraphy "tees", done so elegantly! This one says "Salam"! Priced over $40, and probably harder to pull off if you're not super-model skinny! Mashallah, these ladies are beautiful - but I see lobes!

Men's styles too!

How cute is this Prayer shirt?! Awww!

Here's a fun little fashion show video by Primomoda if you need a bit of inspiration!

This is a modest clothing line geared towards Muslim women...not the most modest since they appeal to a wide range of Muslim women, but some great selections for everyone! And swimwear!

New! Austereattire.com

New hijab site alert! Austereattire.com is a cute, boutique hijab store based in the U.S. The collection is still small but impressive, and well-priced at $12 each! I like the way they wrap their scarves in the photos as well: tight around the neck and a loose "bib" (for lack of a better word!) in front - looks very chic! Especially with the ruffles! This is one store to keep an eye on girls...

ResportOn Review!

Salaaam athletes! I have another sport hijab review for you! ResportOn is a Canadian designed sport hijab brand that's starting to get a lot of attention in the press, and for good reason; it's the first sport hijab I've seen that is attached to a shirt so it has no loose parts. This makes it great for competitive sports, especially where you may have some strict clothing guidelines for safety reasons.

The highlights of this hijab are:

  • No front closures that could unfasten, cause safety issues, or cause discomfort
  • No bulky fabric around your neck to adjust as you play
  • Back buttoned opening allows for adjustment of ponytail
  • Stretchy fabric moves with you as you move your head
  • Thin, breathable sports fabric
This is a great idea and a fantastic advancement in sports wear for Muslim women! I do wonder if they will make a version with (tight) full sleeves as well, because I figure that anyone who wants to cover their hair also wants to cover their arms, and with this you'ld have to wear yet another layer to do so if you were wearing a jersey or t-shirt. Also, any hijab that doesn't have an adjustable headcover risks that if it is too loose for your head there's no tightening it. But I wouldn't worry because this is a very customer-oriented business and they won't stop until  you're satisfied!

All-in-all a great product, and I'll be waiting to see more products from the ResportOn line!!

Sundresses Galore!

Sundresses matched with long sleeved crop-tops and cover-ups are a great way for younger Muslim girls to cover up this summer, and in the latest fashions..I've been buying tons of summer clothes for my teen from stores like H&M, Urban Planet, Urban Behavior, and Forever 21; it's amazing the trendy outfits we can pull together from the mall! The best part is that you can find sundresses from just $10, and once you've got a few crop tops in the basic colors you just mix and match with all your sundresses, so it's really an inexpensive look! I try to make sure the sundresses fall at-least mid-thigh for modesty, and match them with slimmer pants so it's not too bulky, and of course wear flats or sandals to finish off this cute look.

I incorporate this look into my wardrobe as well, but always with longer tops (like the navy cover-up), and larger patterns. Fun!
