Harem pants? HARAM pants!

Not related to modest fashion, but I need to say a word about harem pants....now, I realize that fashion trends come and go.....but I didn't realize that designers would go THIS far back for fashion inspiration!

I find this look to be laughable and - thankfully - haven't seen it catching on! The last photo is the closest thing to wearable harem pants I could find. Can you believe the first photo is Ralph Lauren and costs over $1600 !! LOL.

Maybe it's just a reminder of a tiny piece of history I'ld rather forget (FYI, the word harem comes from the arabic word "haram" which referred to women's courters which were forbidden for men to enter), or maybe it's just that they're plain ugly, but this is a look that very well should be HARAM!

Get Girly with Floral Tunics

I'm actually really excited that florals are in style again, because, despite my love for feminine, floral patterns, I haven't owned anything floral in years. Time to get girly again!

I found these lovely, light cotton tunics at www.modestkini.com , a site that sells predominantly modest swim wear, but also has a small collection of tunics.
Ok, so it looks like they threw the shirts on the floor to take the photos - not the most professional way to take a photo - but for under $30 I'll just pretend I didn't notice....oh, it's a UK store, by the way, but seemingly ship overseas..
p.s. they take Paypal
check it out!

Shopping Break-Down

That's IT! I can't stand it any longer!! I'm getting a U.S. address with myus.com so I can order from Newport-news and Spiegel! They have some of the most sophisticated modest clothes I've ever seen - lots of the skirts are long length (not above ankle like most retailers) and tons of wide pants, long tops, blazers, dusters, with great prices especially when on sale or clearance, WOW, I've seen awesome skirts on sale for $15 ...worth the extra cost of buying a US address. Here's a small sample below; this is the nicest floral skirt I've seen so far this season - bold, romantic, yet extremely modest!

Sales & New Stuff!

If you've signed up for Artizara's newsletter check your email cuz there's a 'spend $100 and get $20 off' coupon in there....if you haven't signed up yet, what are you waiting for? Free coupons! Here's a tunic from their new collection....really cute hey? My favorite thing about Artizara is that they make matching hijabs for a lot of the tops! Genius...why don't more stores do that? Shukr, are you listening??

Speaking of Shukr, they have their first spring sale! This lovely skirt is only $34.95 and as you may know, a Shukr skirt is unsurpassed in quality - I've had many that last years, wash after wash, without a single thread out of place, mashallah.

Lastly, http://www.losve.com/ has new stuff in stock, though I must say that their collection seems to be getting less modest since I first found them online a few months ago...but still a few nice long skirts and tops to check out, and lots of bold patterned square hijabs/scarves too!
Keep shopping girls! Let's do our part to save the economy ;)

Salam!

Fruits & Florals for Spring!

Here are some photos from my latest trip to the mall, and it's true what you hear - florals and citrus fruit colors are definitely the theme for spring. I found tons of yellow/lemon, orange/tangerine, green/lime/melon colors and floral patterns galore!
These photos are a few of my favorites. It's amazing the lovely modest outfits us Muslim fashionistas can piece together at the mall, if we have the energy to go searching through every store that is! I even found some nice hijabs (scarves) as well in trendy colors.
Yaye! Time to brighten up the wardrobe for spring! Ba bye greys and blacks!

Square Scarf Wrap!

Yes, square scarves can be wrapped too! This is my new favorite square scarf style. I'm really into silky square scarves right now cuz I need more color and patterns in my life, but most of the ones I find are a bit smaller than I like once I fold them into semi-triangles.

This style however is perfect for the typical 34x34 inch square scarf! PLUS, since the scarf isn't folded in half, it's a lot less thick for the warmer days ahead!

First, put on your under-scarf or head-band. Then, pin under your chin so one side is very short as shown.

The trick is to first take the long end and straight pin it on the side of your head you pass first in your wrap; this is crucial to keep the look neat. Then you grab the same end a little further down and pass over this first pinning so the first pin is not even seen.

Continue the wrap, pinning again at the back of the head and once again when you get to the other side of your head (3 straight pins in total). You have to try this maneuvering of the wrap as it's a bit different than wrapping an oblong scarf, but it's easy enough.

All this quick straight pinning keeps everything securely in place (especially with slippery silk) and neatens the look. The final result is SO comfortable, I promise. Covers the bust well too :)

Play with your hijab styles, change it up for spring, re-invent yourself, and enjoy the beauty of hijab!

Girls Modest Swim Suits Selling Fast!

FYI, if you have young girls who are getting old enough that they need to start wearing more modest swimsuits (like ages 8-12), I noticed this year that a lot of stores are offering swim shirts (sometimes called "rash guards") and swim shorts, but they seem to be selling out fast where I live. I found really cute matching sets at La Senza and Zellers - didn't look any further cuz I found what I needed - but they were selling out fast! I was quite happy to see the continuation of this modest trend in girls clothing because I know in past years I had a hard time finding modest swimwear for girls.

Also if you have a girl that wears hijab and needs full coverage, Ahiida offers girls sizes from 8-14 and if you know my blog you know that I LOVE my ahiida suit :)) Just used it this weekend!

Spring Cleaning on ebay!

If you're like me you've been cleaning out your closet, and you've probably found some pretty decent stuff in there that you just don't want anymore.

I listed a few of my old or unworn hijabs, jilbabs, skirts, etc. on ebay in the last month and made over a hundred dollars. Not a fortune - but considering they were things I never planned to wear again, (and in some cases things that I had bought and never worn) - it's basically free money :)

I've been selling and shopping on ebay for years and have never had a problem. I find that most users are good-natured and honest. There's really a spirit of community on eBay (sounds cheesy I know but it's true), so if you're honest and communicate well with the people you deal with, there shouldn't be any problems! There's tons of learning tools to get you started too if it's your first time. Just check out the Help section.

Then you can enjoy the THRILL of shopping for new hijabs online with "free money"!

Mona Mania

Can you say cute? And comfortable! I forgot to mention when I posted about www.middleeasternmall.com that they have a large collection of Mona hijabs with cute & trendy prints. I have ordered mona hijabs from them before and they are really comfortable.
TIP: wear a cotton undercap or headband underneath to reduce slippage. Also, I was afraid that the bright colors of some of the caps like fuschia, orange, or turquoise wouldn't look good against my pale face, but I find that just adding a white or lighter headband peaking out underneath offsets the brightness and looks cute too. So don't be afraid of bright colors!
For those of you who don't know, a Mona hijab is like two hijabs sewn together. The first piece looks like a one-piece stretchy amira hijab, while the second piece is an oblong hijab sewn onto the amira under the neck. You just wrap the oblong piece around and pin on the side of the head. This reduces your pinning and thus is a fast simple way to wrap! Plus the two pieces are nicely coordinated for you. Great for beginners I would say!
